Reg to VIN
Find a VIN from a UK number plate
Enter a registration number and get the vehicle’s full VIN, with its make, model, year, body type and fuel type. Not a history report you have to buy to see one line of: just the VIN, for £2.50.
What you get
The VIN is the main thing, and it is what you pay for. If we cannot return a valid 17-character VIN for the registration you entered, the hold on your card is released and you are not charged.
With it comes whatever else is recorded for the vehicle: make, model, the year it was first registered, body type, fuel type, driveline and where it was built. Some of those are not held for every vehicle, so a result can have fewer lines than the example.
It is not a history check. It does not tell you about outstanding finance, write-offs, mileage or MOT results.

Why people need it
When the reg is not enough
A number plate can be moved from one car to another. The VIN cannot, which is why it is the number that gets asked for.
Ordering parts
Two cars of the same model and year can take different parts. Suppliers and dealer parts desks match on the VIN, because it is the only thing that says exactly which one you have.
Buying a used car
The VIN stamped on the car should be the VIN recorded against its registration. Knowing it before you travel means you can check the two agree when you get there.
Insurance and finance
Insurers, finance companies and warranty providers ask for the VIN on quotes and claims. It is quicker to look it up than to go out to the car.
Garages and bodyshops
A customer on the phone knows their reg, not their VIN. One lookup gets you the number you need to price the job before the car arrives.
FAQ
Reg to VIN questions
- Can I get a VIN from a UK number plate?
- Yes. Enter the registration number and VIN from Reg returns the 17-character VIN recorded for that vehicle, with its make, model, year, body type and fuel type.
- How much does it cost?
- £2.50 for one lookup. There is no account to create and no subscription.
- What if the VIN cannot be found?
- You are not charged. Your card is only held while we look, and the hold is released if we cannot return a VIN for that registration.
- What is a VIN?
- A Vehicle Identification Number is the 17-character code given to a vehicle when it is built. It stays with the vehicle for life, unlike a number plate, which can be changed. It is often called the chassis number.
- Is the VIN the same as the chassis number?
- For any modern vehicle, yes. "Chassis number" is the older name, and on vehicles built since the 1980s the chassis number is the 17-character VIN.
- Why would I need the VIN?
- Parts suppliers use it to find the exact part for a vehicle, insurers and finance companies ask for it, and it is how you confirm a car is the one its paperwork describes.
- Do I need an account?
- No. Enter the reg, pay by card, and the result is shown on screen and emailed to you.
